Inside or outside the IP system? Business creation in academia
I wrote this from the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, where I represented AUTM at the last of the Secretary of Commerce Locke’s four regional University Innovation Forums. I’ll report on this meeting next week. Earlier this week I attended the Central Region Meeting in Memphis. I was given a T-shirt emblazoned with the AUTM logo and “Central Region Rocks!!!!!!!!” and I really can’t argue with that sentiment. A great meeting and many kudos and thanks to Sue Patow and her committee. By the way, Beale Street rocks too.

I apologize to the membership for taking so long to start sharing my thoughts and observations about what is going on in our world. I guess I’m just from the pre-blog generation, but hopefully this old dog can learn a new trick or two. Since I’m rarely short of an opinion, it’s just a question of my getting comfortable with the medium and the immediacy of it.

I would like to get some opinions regarding your experience (positive or negative) using Open Innovation firms (i.e.: Innocentive, Nine Sigma, Yet2.com; others) to communicate technology needs and find open innovation partners?

I’ve just returned from a visit to Washington, DC and I was joined by Ashley Stevens, AUTM President, Arundeep Pradhan, Immediate Past President, and Andy Cohn, VP Public Policy. We spent the better part of a day visiting with Hill staffers as a follow-up to the hearing held last week on accelerating commercialization. In all of our visits there was one consistent point/question/interest that we addressed, “What else can the federal government do to accelerate commercialization?” Outside of oil spill concerns, this phrase, “accelerate commercialization” is The Buzz in Washington, DC, which generates both excitement and fear for me.

I currently run a life science incubator and direct all the technology transfer from the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences at Little Rock, Arkansas. We are a small shop as part of the only academic health center in the state in middle of a well networked entrepreneurial community. Our research expenditure are about $100M and we generate about 30-40 invention disclosures a year with a mix of therapeutic, devices and tools. I have a long time licensing associate who is retiring and I am looking for a replacement. If any of you know some one with licensing experience who might be interested in the comfortable and inexpensive lifestyle of a place like Little Rock please have them contact me at mdouglas@uams.edu or call 501213-5585.
