Do you know what industry is looking for? Find out at the 2015 AUTM Eastern Regional Meeting!

More and more lately, universities and companies realize that they have strengths and needs that are mutually compatible. So they recognize that collaboration is worth doing, but sometimes organizations from such different sectors have trouble connecting.

Enter the online tools.

A range of database-oriented resources -- both for-profit and non-profit -- have stepped in to make the opportunities for collaboration easier to identify and manage. Even AUTM got into the act with the Global Technology Portal at http://gtp.autm.net, with which I was pleased to be involved.

To be successful in connecting with the companies that are well-matched to your institution, it helps to understand:

•    How companies approach and manage their R&D
•    How they identify a technical need
•    How they seek out solutions

Universities can then apply this understanding to more effectively present their technologies, capabilities, and other strengths so that industry can find them and see them as a valuable partner.

So I’ve put together a session for the AUTM Eastern Region Meeting called “Tech Scouting: What Industry Is Looking For and How to Be Found.” The panelists will help you maximize your use of the various online platforms available to find and connect with industry and have greater success in establishing university-industry collaborations:

•    Sophia Herbert-Peterson, Associate Director of Industry Collaboration of Georgia Tech Research Corporation, will talk about their effective approaches to connecting with industry
•    Bill Moylan, an executive vice president at Wellspring Worldwide will talk about how online IP databases such as Sophia and Flintbox function and the best practices for using them
•    We are also lining up a speaker from a commercial company that is proactively engaged in technology scouting to provide the industry perspective that is essential for success.

I hope you’ll join me in Raleigh for this useful and insightful session. And if you haven’t yet registered for the Eastern Region Meeting, there’s a lower registration fee offer valid until July 7th.
