The AUTM Annual Meeting (AM) Program Committee is responsible for lining up all of the educational content at the AM—we chose the plenary speakers as well as select the workshop, educational track (ed track) and special interest group (SIG) sessions that will be presented at the AM. In addition, the committee is responsible for coordinating various special events that will be run at the annual meeting (such as the venture forum, the Texas Hold 'em poker tournament, fireside chat, partnering activities, etc.). The 20 or so members of the committee are tasked with choosing a balanced mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced-level sessions on timely and appealing ...

For those who are coming to the 2017 Central Region Meeting and would like to "relax" by playing some card or board games, have I got an idea for you! I'm planning to bring to Chicago several card games (e.g., Uno, Dominion, 7 Wonders: Duel, Thunderstone, Splendor, Race for the Galaxy, Eminent Domain, Castles of Burgundy-The Card Game, Bang!), as well as several board games (e.g., Blokus, Lords of Waterdeep, Ticket to Ride, Roll for the Galaxy, Settlers of Catan, Suburbia) that are easy to learn, generally play in 20-60 minutes, are fun (i.e. are not Monopoly or Risk), and go well with your favorite fruit of the vine (wine) or malt beverage (beer). For those ...

The AUTM 2012 Leadership Forum took place Nov. 13-14 in Napa, CA. The event provided a great opportunity to connect and discuss taking a leadership role in accelerating commercialization. Our keynote speaker, Richard Bendis, Founder and CEO of Innovation America, gave the opening keynote address: The Global Innovation Imperative. Bendis discussed the evolving role of universities in driving the innovation ecosystem around them. He discussed the importance of universities in regional innovation clusters and how critical it is for them to be active participants in private/public partnerships that are leading the growth of innovation-based economic developing ...

While technology transfer has garnered more attention than ever before from government officials and economic-development organizations, there remains a great deal of misunderstanding about how the process actually works. Because it is a complex profession fraught with nuances and complexities not necessarily obvious to non-practitioners, it is important that we take every opportunity to communicate with policy makers who are creating legislation and allocating resources that impact our profession. The good news is that these policy makers welcome the opportunity to learn more about what we do and in particular to hear about the impact of our profession at the ...

As many have heard, the AUTM Program Committee has scheduled 2 debates for the upcoming Annual Meeting. The Committee endeavored to select relevant, controversial and interesting topics – little did the Committee know how on-the-mark it would be! Both of the debate topics have recently received wide public attention. The SACGHS report came out last year providing suggestions to limiting the patenting of genomic inventions, and the final report is due in short order (surely to spark controversy). More recently the Kauffman Foundation Harvard Business Review snippet and subsequent letter to the Commerce department surfaced suggesting that university inventors ...

Patent reform was reintroduced in the 111th Congress earlier this month by Senator Leahy ( S. 515 ) and Rep. John Conyers ( H.R. 1260 ) in two separate bills. These bills are similar to those introduced in the 110th Congress and I see that some issues will need to be addressed again. You can read about the previous bills in the public policy section of the AUTM Web site. Some provisions in the current bills would not affect technology transfer but a few of these provisions warrant our attention. Fundamentally, the constitution guarantees a patent holder certain rights – specifically the right to exclude others from practicing the patented technology. Taken ...

Our profession has suffered a great loss today, and everyone here at AUTM—the Board and staff, are mourning one of technology transfer's most well-known and beloved icons, Howard Bremer. While this news is heartbreaking, we should focus on Howard's stunning accomplishments during his 53-year career in technology transfer and the tremendous legacy with which he leaves us. There is very little that I can say that would do justice to Howard's impact on the technology transfer profession and AUTM. He began his career working on well-known and enduring products including a few very famous detergents and toothpastes that many of us use every day. He helped evolve ...

I'm thrilled to report that the AUTM Global Technology Portal (GTP) experienced a successful launch Monday, Feb. 6. The site already has nearly 4,000 listings of available technologies – clearly many more visitors and technologies to follow. If you haven't had a chance to visit the GTP yet, please login now and tell us what you think . On behalf of the AUTM Board, I'd like to thank Laura Schoppe, AUTM VP for Strategic Alliances for the incredible amount of personal /volunteer time and effort she provided to make the GTP a reality. The idea for the GTP first arose after AUTM surveyed members. We asked how AUTM could help you achieve success, and ...

Dear AUTM member: It was two years ago when we first saw a proposal from the Kauffman Foundation referencing a concept that is now referred to as "free agency." It appeared in a memo to the Department of Commerce and Harvard Business Review. Arun Pradhan, as AUTM president at the time, wrote an excellent response to Commerce and we saw very little activity around the concept for some time. Last December Senators Moran (KS) and Warner (VA) introduced S. 1965 , The Startup Act, to the Senate. This bill is a good one—providing much needed support to accelerate the formation of startups and removes some unnecessary hurdles. However, there is one ...

Jobs. Companies. Innovation. If you have picked up a newspaper or watched the news lately, you know these are hot topics. In these difficult, but recovering, economic times, new ideas that would spur innovation and therefore increase jobs are proposed in a number of forums. One such idea, from the Kauffman Foundation, has received a lot of attention. You may have seen it in Harvard Business Review’s Breakthrough Ideas for 2010 . But well before that article appeared, a separate, more detailed communication was provided by the Kauffman Foundation to the higher echelons of the Department of Commerce. The ideas proposed in the article have generated ...

As we come to the end of another winter there is a chill blowing across the United States and luckily, this time, it has nothing to do with Arctic air from Canada. This chill could very easily spell an almost total halt in pharmaceutical industry collaborations with National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers. Let me explain. In a recent letter to NIH Director Dr. Francis S. Collins, Sen. Ron Wyden (D – Oregon) has implored the NIH to reconsider its policies in order to ensure that “When taxpayer-funded research is commercialized, the public deserves a real return on its investment.” Essentially Sen. Wyden wants NIH to require consideration of the public ...

This is a post that first appeared on LinkedIn and probably best fits technology transfer professionals who are just starting out. However, making a name for yourself in this industry is incredibly important in landing your dream job. Let’s face it, technology commercialization is a close-knit niche. People tend to stay, and while they might work for different organizations, they seldom leave the field. We work with a lot of clients at prestigious universities, companies, and labs and they all want experience. But experience isn’t enough to stand out among other candidates. 5 Tips on How to Get Employers to Ask for You by Name Standing out ...

Patent Reform legislation is back again in the form of S. 515 and HR 1260. In fact, the Senate Judiciary Committee may vote on this legislation on Thursday, April 2, 2009. This legislation could significantly affect the ability of AUTM members to license technology and spin off startup companies from university technologies. Over the past year, the AUTM Board initiated a process to work more closely with the university associations, including the Association of American Universities (AAU) , the American Council on Education (ACE), the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC), the Association of American Medical ...

In a 7-2 vote, the Supreme Court rejected Stanford’s argument that the Bayh-Dole Act over-rode the normal workings of the US Patent System under which the inventor, not the inventor’s employer, applies for and initially owns any patent applications they file. AUTM and six other academic organizations had filed an amicus brief supporting Stanford’s position. The Solicitor General also supported Stanford’s position. The decision was narrow. It didn’t weaken Bayh-Dole in any way. At its heart, this was a contractual dispute. In Stanford’s form of inventor agreement, the professor promised they would assign any inventions they subsequently made when they made ...
