ABOUT THE SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE LICENSING
WORKSHOP
October 6, 2009
Universities are a major
source of innovations that are developed into new medical treatments and
disease preventatives, such as drugs and vaccines, for populations throughout
the world. Access to these medical
advances, particularly in the developing world, is increasingly a topic of
discussion. The purposes of this workshop
are to explore issues which affect access and to assist universities in developing
best practices in “socially responsible licensing.”
The workshop will include
participants from academia, non-profits and industry, and topics will include:
- goals for socially responsible licensing
- constraints and frameworks which may limit or
shape the approaches academia and industry each can take
- current issues as they have surfaced through
recent efforts in socially responsible licensing
- with this input, creation of a basic roadmap for
universities interested in establishing socially responsible practices and
policies.
The two-session workshop will
review stakeholder perspectives and the current status of licensing with regard
to access, and will include a discussion on deals, programs and business models
that foster social responsibility.
Specific contract provisions and practices that support successful
outcomes for licensing will also be addressed.
