We heard you! The AUTM member survey reveals strong member interest in metrics and surveys

As AUTM President Todd Sherer mentioned in his recent blog, AUTM program area leaders are working with the AUTM Member Needs Survey Taskforce to review data from the recent member survey.

As the AUTM VP for Metrics & Surveys, I am pleased that the membership finds AUTM's data collection/surveys to be an important member benefit. We have reviewed the membership survey responses and we are taking action to address the feedback and suggestions you provided.

Some respondents noted that a member benefit they would appreciate would be information on royalty rates and other deal terms. I'm happy to report that AUTM is in the process of developing its own royalty rates and deal term database that will provide valuable information on the business terms in academic license agreements across a wide spectrum of fields or technologies. We are beta testing the product for the AUTM Board during the upcoming Board meeting in San Antonio. We hope to roll it out for data collection later this year. This database will provide a unique resource for members and will build on AUTM's already strong reputation for providing metrics and other data. Many survey respondents indicated that the deal making opportunities AUTM offers are important, and we feel that this new database will be a powerful tool for members to leverage.

Many members mentioned that they find the information contained in the annual AUTM Licensing Activity Survey and STATT professionally very useful. Our working committees will continue to refine AUTM surveys to provide the most up-to-date information on topics that affect AUTM. The
AUTM Licensing Activity Survey and STATT database continue to evolve. More recently, data from ASTP was added to STATT to provide a more global view of activities. AUTM has also partnered with NCET2 to provide additional information regarding university startup activities.

We look forward to your feedback on these new initiatives and other suggestions to make these instruments even more helpful.

Sincerely,

Richard Kordal, Ph.D., RTTP
AUTM VP for Metrics & Surveys
